Excess Hours for Doctoral Students
What are Excess Hours?
Doctoral students who take more than 130 semester credit hours to complete their degree will be subject to out-of-state tuition rates. This is only for students working on their Doctor of Philosophy degree. Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, and Doctor of Public Health degrees are exempt from this requirement.
How much will I get charged?
You will be charged for the non-resident rate regardless of your residency status or any appointment, fellowship, or other circumstance that would normally entitle you to resident tuition rates. The non-resident tuition rate will be charged in the semester following the semester in which the limit is met. You can visit the Tuition and Fee website to see exact charges.
Why is there a limit? Why am I being charged extra?
The State of Texas does not provide funds to state institutions for doctoral students who have had excess hours. The extra tuition rate helps cover expenses otherwise covered by the State of Texas (see Texas Education Code 54.012).
Why is only the Doctor of Philosophy degree subject to this policy?
The other degrees at UNTHSC are considered professional programs and are not subject to the policy.
