Add/Drop Classes

Adding Classes

Students can add courses through the Student Portal (MyHSC) during registration until the last day to add/drop. Students may not add classes after the add/drop date. See the Academic Calendar for registration periods and the last day to add/drop.

Some courses require permission to register. Please contact your advisor to obtain a permission number or to make sure you have fulfilled all prerequisite courses.

If you are having problems adding classes to your schedule please see our tutorial.

If you do not see the term you are trying to register for, or are still unable to register, please contact us

Dropping a Class During the Add/Drop Period

Classes can be dropped through the Student Portal (MyHSC) during the add/drop or registration period. A class dropped during this period and before the census date will not appear on transcripts and will receive 100% refund, unless all classes are dropped (please see our webpage regarding withdrawal/leave of absence).

Occasionally you will be unable to drop a class during the add/drop period due to restrictions in our system, particularly online classes. If you are unable to drop a class you can fill out the add/drop form or submit a request in writing to the Office of the Registrar that includes:

  • Your name.
  • The course you are dropping.
  • Your student ID number.
  • Your signature. On email requests, your live.unthsc.edu email address will be honored as your signature.

Dropping a Class before Census Date

The class will not appear on the transcript if dropped before 5:00pm on the census date. During the add/drop period, you can use the Student Portal (MyHSC). After the add/drop period, you can fill out the add/drop form or submit a request in writing.

If a class is dropped but the student is enrolled in another class during that same session, the student will receive a full refund if the class is dropped before the census date (see the Academic Calendar for this date).

Dropping a Class after Census Date

A class may be dropped after the census date. Classes dropped after the census date will appear on the student’s transcript and will not be refunded. A grade of “W” (withdrawal) will be automatically assigned from the census date until the date when instructors may assign a “WF” (withdrawal failing) for dropped courses. After that date, the instructor determines if the student will receive a “W” or “WF”.

To drop a course after the census date, please fill out the add/drop form (required when needing instructor approval) or submit a request in writing to the Office of the Registrar that includes:

  • Your name.
  • The course you are dropping.
  • Your student ID number.
  • Your signature. On email requests, your live.unthsc.edu email address will be honored as your signature.

Dropping all Courses

Dropping all of the courses within a long semester (fall or spring) is considered a withdrawal or a leave of absence. All withdrawals and leave of absence paperwork must be coordinated with the Office of the Registrar before classes will be dropped. Please see our webpage regarding Withdrawals and Leave of Absences.
