Rangel promoted to new position focusing on academic innovation

January 17, 2020 • Office of the Provost, Staff

With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Strategic Leadership degrees and more than 30 years of experience in health care, Jessica brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to this role.  She has most recently served as Director of SaferCare Texas (formerly the Institute for Patient Safety) where she has been instrumental in creating a successfully integrated team focused on improving the quality and safety of health care in Texas and throughout the nation.  Prior to joining the Health Science Center, she was the System Patient Safety Officer at Texas Health Resources.

In her new role, Jessica will lead the intersection of strategy, design, policy and innovation for the Health Science Center’s academic initiatives.  She will oversee SaferCare Texas, the Center for Innovative Learning (CIL), INCEDO, the Simulation Center, and Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPEP), reporting directly to me.

“The vision for this position is to capitalize on our vibrant, innovative HSC community to cultivate new initiatives while maximizing our existing ones.  At the heart of this position is ‘Innovation:  ideas that are leveraged from passionate curiosity.’  Until now, we have not had a formal pathway to operationalize on the ideas of our students, staff and faculty.  I am committed to creating venues for channeling and empowering these ideas to solve problems and deliver on strategic initiatives within and throughout our community,” says Rangel.

Please join me in congratulating Jessica and thank you in advance for your support as she assumes the responsibilities of her new position. As always, if you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to call me at x0268 or send an email to Charles.Taylor@unthsc.edu.
