UNTHSC students earn historic roles on TSPTA board

The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth is celebrating a milestone achievement as two students from its Department of Physical Therapy have secured leadership positions on the Texas Student Physical Therapy Association board. This marks the first time in HSC history that two representatives will serve simultaneously.

Peyton Fisher, a second-year physical therapy student from Fort Worth, has been named vice president of the TSPTA. Alexandra Garza, also a second-year student, originally from San Antonio, will serve as secretary. Their appointments represent a significant step forward for HSC and the visibility of its physical therapy program.

The TSPTA serves as the student voice of the Texas Physical Therapy Association, a chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. Its mission is to inform and engage students about issues impacting the physical therapy profession. Through advocacy, education and professional development, the TSPTA empowers PT and PTA students to participate in shaping the future of their field.

Fisher and Garza are eager to amplify the impact of the TSPTA and connect with their peers across Texas.

Fisher’s journey to the TSPTA board began with a transformative experience on Capitol Hill. “That trip really opened my eyes to the importance of advocacy and being involved with organizations like the TPTA,” Fisher said. “When I saw the elections were open, I knew this was an opportunity to help fellow students and make a difference.”

Garza’s path was similarly inspired by her attendance at last year’s TPTA convention. “I realized how important the TSPTA is for students, yet so many of my peers didn’t even know it existed,” Garza said. “I’m passionate about advocating for our profession and wanted to help spread awareness. Being part of the board allows me to do that.”

Both students are committed to fostering student engagement and enhancing the value of the TSPTA. “Our focus this year is on real-world opportunities for students,” Fisher explained. “We’re planning meetings and workshops on topics like job applications, student loan repayment, and navigating insurance as providers—practical things that aren’t always covered in school.”

Garza emphasized the importance of professional development and networking. “The TSPTA is here to create opportunities for students to grow, connect, and be educated about our profession,” Garza said. “We’re working hard to make sure every PT and PTA student in Texas knows about us and has the chance to benefit.”

A proud moment for UNTHSC

Dr. Michael Furtado, associate professor and chair of the Department of Physical Therapy, lauded the students for their accomplishment. “We have not had representation on the TSPTA from UNTHSC for quite some time,” Furtado said. “I am very proud of Alexandra and Peyton for stepping into leadership roles here in our program but also now at the state level. I am looking forward to all that they will accomplish in these roles.”

Garza noted the significance of the milestone. “It’s rare to have two people from the same school on the board,” she said. “This is a huge accomplishment for our program and a great way to put HSC on the map.”

As Fisher and Garza take on their new roles, they are poised to make a lasting impact on their peers and the profession of physical therapy. Their leadership not only reflects their dedication but also highlights the growing influence of HSC in shaping the future of healthcare in Texas.
