Dimitrios Karamichos, Ph.D., interim dean of UNTHSC’s College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences, recently was recognized with the 2025 Achievements in Eye and Vision Advocacy Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

This distinguished award goes to individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing eye and vision research advocacy. Karamichos will be honored in May at the organization’s annual meeting.

Karamichos, who also serves as executive director and endowed chair of the North Texas Eye Research Institute at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, has long been at the forefront of vision research. His work focuses on developing new treatments for corneal trauma, dystrophies and diseases, while his advocacy efforts have significantly advanced awareness and funding for eye health initiatives.

A dedicated champion for vision research, Karamichos has participated in congressional briefings, led educational campaigns and spearheaded community initiatives to promote eye health. His commitment extends beyond the lab, reaching into communities through public awareness events. As a mentor, he has been instrumental in fostering the next generation of vision researchers by providing professional development opportunities and cultivating an inclusive, collaborative environment for early-career scientists.

Named one of the Most Visionary Leaders to Watch in 2024 by Healthcare Everything magazine, Karamichos has made significant contributions to the field. In 2023, he launched Whole Eye Health, an initiative emphasizing the critical connection between eye health and overall well-being. The inaugural symposium brought together researchers, clinicians and patient advocates to discuss clinical advancements and the importance of an integrated approach to vision care.

“It is an incredible honor to be recognized by ARVO for advocacy in eye and vision research,” Karamichos said. “Advocacy plays a critical role in ensuring that vision science continues to advance. I am grateful for the support and resources provided by UNTHSC’s leadership that make achievements like this possible.”

Looking ahead, Karamichos remains committed to advancing education, awareness and advocacy for vision health. He plans to continue deepening his research into eye diseases, technological advancements and policy developments with the goal of sharing this knowledge with both eye care professionals and the public. He will also maintain his support for organizations advocating for increased funding and improved access to eye care through donations, volunteering and strategic partnerships.

Karamichos’ efforts highlight both his personal dedication and UNTHSC’s commitment to improving health outcomes and advancing scientific discovery in vision science.
