UNTHSC hosts conference on teaching science

On Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14, the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth will host the Southwest Regional National Science Foundation (NSF) GK-12 conference for educators who support kindergarten through 12th grade students, including high school teachers, project managers, evaluators, research advisors, and university faculty. Fifty attendees from Texas A&M, University of Texas Arlington, Texas State University-San Marcos, University of Arizona, Louisiana Tech University, University of North Texas, Tucson High Magnet School, Sam Houston High School and Workman Junior High School are registered to attend. Sonia Ortega, director of the GK-12 program at the NSF, will discuss the Project SCORE (School’s Cooperative Opportunities for Resources and Education) which supports graduate students who teach in biology classrooms in the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD).

As part of the conference, the Health Science Center will host a live videoconference similar to those that are conducted periodically in biology classrooms in FWISD. These conferences bring FWISD students into a laboratory to observe an actual experiment in progress. The videoconference demonstration from a research laboratory at the Health Science Center is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, at 2:45 p.m.

The Health Science Center has conducted videoconferences from its gross anatomy laboratory to elementary and middle schools throughout Texas as part of a "Connect2Texas Program". This program has presented the "Cardiovascular System" for the last two years and will add the "Brain and Spinal Cord" Control Centers of the Body this spring.
