Texas Center for Patient Safety is the new name of UNT Health’s SaferCare Texas

Pharmacy StockSaferCare Texas, the patient safety center of UNT Health Fort Worth, has announced a new name: the Texas Center for Patient Safety.

The change reflects a return to the center’s founding mission and its continued commitment to improving the quality and safety of health care across Texas.

Originally launched in 2016 as The Institute for Patient Safety, the center was created as a collaborative effort among key regional healthcare partners to address preventable harm and improve patient outcomes across Texas.

Funded by the Texas Legislature, the institute was established with four key purposes that continue to guide its work today:

  • Develop educational programs and student training focused on patient safety.
  • Host an annual Patient Safety Summit to convene experts, share best practices and promote statewide collaboration.
  • Provide seed grant funding to support innovative, small-scale patient safety projects.
  • Advance research, mentorship and a growing network of patient safety fellows committed to improving care delivery.

The new name, Texas Center for Patient Safety, reflects a renewed commitment to these founding goals while expanding its statewide presence and impact.

“Becoming the Texas Center for Patient Safety marks more than a name change—it’s a renewed promise to lead innovation, education and collaboration that protects patients and empowers healthcare professionals across Texas,” center Director Justin Burton said.

As the Texas Center for Patient Safety, the organization will continue to provide education, resources and partnerships that drive measurable improvements in health care safety and quality. Through its Patient Safety Organization—the first ambulatory care Patient Safety Organization in Texas—the center also will serve as a trusted convener and data-driven collaborator, advancing Texas’ leadership in patient safety nationwide.
