The National Research Mentoring Network-Resource Center at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth learned Monday that it was a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Presented by President Joe Biden, the honor recognizes the center NRMN-RC for its exemplary dedication to mentoring individuals from underrepresented groups in STEM education and careers.

Established in 1995, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring is the nation’s highest recognition for the hard work and dedication mentors exhibit in broadening participation in STEM pathways. The award highlights the transformative role mentors and organizations play in shaping the next generation of innovators and technical leaders.

NRMN-RC is one of only five organizations selected nationwide to receive this prestigious recognition. Since its inception, the network has cultivated mentoring relationships and professional development opportunities that support students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career scientists nationwide. The award is shared by UNTHSC investigators Drs. Jamboor Vishwanatha and Damaris Javier, and UTHealth Houston investigator Dr. Toufeeq Syed.

“The National Research Mentoring Network-Resource Center exemplifies the power of mentorship to break down barriers and open doors for future leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Dr. Robert McClain, interim executive vice president of the UNTHSC Division of Research and Innovation. “We are proud of its impactful work and honored to see the center recognized on a national stage.”

As part of the award, NRMN-RC will receive a $10,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, which oversees the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring program. The funding will support the network’s continued efforts to develop inclusive, accessible and effective mentoring programs.

“This award is a testament to the dedication and vision of the NRMN-RC team and its commitment to STEM workforce development through culturally responsive mentorship,” said Vishwanatha, principal investigator of the NRMN-RC and UNTHSC regents professor. “By fostering mentorships, we can create opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to thrive and lead in the sciences.”
