Born in Oklahoma in 1957, Vince Gill first gained fame in the late 1970s as a member of Pure Prairie League. His first solo album, Turn Me Loose (1984), earned him the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male Vocalist Award. In 1989, Gill recorded When I Call Your Name, which was certified double platinum for 2 million copies sold, while the title track earned Gill a 1990 Grammy Award for best country song. In fact, Gill has to date won 20 Grammys, more than any other male country artist. He also holds the notable distinction of being the only person to have won five consecutive Country Music Association Awards for best male vocalist, tying with George Strait for the most wins in that category. In August 2007, Gill was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame by the Country Music Association.
Vince Gill is generally regarded as one of music’s all-time great musicians in any genre. He once declined an invitation from Mark Knopfler to join Dire Straits as a full time member. In 2013, he was invited by Eric Clapton to be part of his Crossroads Guitar Festival Cinema Event. Also featured were Greg Allman, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr., and Keith Richards.
