Health literacy is a product of the health literacy-related demands and complexities of the health care system. System changes are needed to align health care demands better with the public’s skills and abilities to ensure care and instructions are understood and actionable.

Many deaths and events of serious harm happening in U.S. healthcare are preventable. These poor health outcomes happen for a number of reasons. They can also include culture, language, education, and low health literacy.
