Irina Azcona
Irina Azcona is passionate about public sector work and committed to advancing her career in higher education. She started her career in higher education as a Student Library Technician at The Walter Geology Library, The University of Texas at Austin, where she repaired damaged books and geological maps, and manually bound journals and periodicals.
Irina became interested in Human Resources while working for the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) – a water, wastewater, and electric utility company – as a Training and Development Representative in the department of Organizational Development. During her time at BPUB she facilitated all new-hire orientation sessions and co-facilitated new board member orientation alongside BPUB’s legal team. Irina considers herself fortunate to have received extensive training in adult learning theory, conflict mediation, and meeting facilitation, as well as earning her certification as a trainer and facilitator with the Association for Talent Development (ATD). This certification not only enhanced her presentation and delivery skills, but also improved her ability to communicate with empathy and connect with audiences on a deeper level.
Prior to joining UNT System, Irina served as an HR Coordinator at a Federally Qualified Health Center, where she supported the HR Director in medical staff credentialing and coordinated, monitored, and tracked required staff vaccinations.
In her current role as a Compensation Analyst, she has further developed the following key skills:
- Analytical Thinking: Analyzes compensation data and employee relations trends to inform decision-making.
- Adaptability: Demonstrates the ability to navigate changing policies and organizational needs, particularly in times of change management.
- Leadership & Collaboration: Partners with HSC HR Business Partners, Recruiters, and campus leadership, engaging department directors, managers, and staff to foster a culture of transparency and positive HR practices.
- Attention to Detail: Demonstrates meticulous attention to detail when managing employee and new hire salary data, ensuring precision and accuracy.
Irina is committed to furthering her expertise in Human Resources while continuing to make meaningful contributions to UNT HSC and UNT System.
Irina holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from The University of Texas at Austin, where she developed critical thinking and research skills that have significantly contributed to her success in HR.
