James L. West Alzheimer’s Center (JLW)
JLW is a nonprofit organization founded on the love and compassion of Eunice P. West, who witnessed the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease on her husband, Fort Worth Business leader and philanthropist James L. West. To honor her husband’s memory she provided funding to build a nondenominational facility dedicated to the care of people living with Alzheimer’s and related disorders, which opened in 1993. The Center’s mission is to assist the whole family from diagnosis to end of life, engage in meaningful research and share its knowledge with the community at large.
In addition, JLW has always embraced the education of health profession students and has invited UNTHSC, JPS, and TCU healthcare professional students to perform their clinical rotations.
JLW has launched several formal community education outreach activities in collaboration with United Way’s Area Agency on Aging (AAATC) for a Stress Busting Program for Alzheimer’s Family Caregivers. The Stress Busting Program meets for nine weeks in a small group setting that teaches: stress management techniques, relaxation and coping strategies, and problem solving.
What Is WE HAIL Doing?
The WE HAIL Program will enable JLW to provide this nine- session Stress Busting Program to Alzheimer’s and Dementia family caregivers living in the rural surrounding Johnson and Parker Counties.
As of now, over 70 older adults and caregivers have received this training.
“The most helpful part of the Stress Busting program was hearing how other caregivers handle different situations. Going the program changed the way I deal with stress, because I learned several alternatives to handle stress; breathe, let go and not to sweat the small stuff!”
Cindy S. – care partner to parents
“The Stress Busting program changed me 100%. I’m able to understand the sickness, why I was stressed and how I can help myself by using different techniques to relax.”
Maria B. – care partner to sister
