The National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) is one part of the NIH’s $500 million plan over 10 years to develop new approaches aimed at helping researchers from underrepresented backgrounds thrive in biomedical careers. The mentoring network’s aim is to diversify the scientific workforce by encouraging individuals from underrepresented groups to start and stay in biomedical careers.  NRMN will partner with over 30 professional scientific societies and numerous colleges and universities, including 20 historically black colleges and universities, a consortium of Hispanic-serving institutions, organizations supporting tribal colleges, numerous minority-serving organizations, and NIH-funded centers. Dr. Jones serves as Co-Investigator of the Professional Development Core of NRMN and is the P.I. of UNTHSC’s NRMN-STAR Professional Development Program.

The Summer Multicultural Advanced Research Training (SMART) Program brings undergraduate students to the UNT Health Science Center campus to participate in a 10-week biomedical sciences project. Participants become familiar with the varied disciplines and methodology used in biomedical research.

      SMART is a program for multicultural students made possible in part by the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The NIH has designated African Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans and Mainland Puerto Ricans as underrepresented populations in the sciences. The Steps Toward Academic Research (STAR) Fellowship Program has been an unqualified success as a component of the Texas Center For Health Disparities Research Training/Education Core by supporting the professional development of faculty in health disparities research. The STAR Fellowship Program is designed for junior faculty and community partners who are interested in Health Disparity Research. The Program offers a full year of collaborative training and interaction with faculty from the UNTHSC and other institutions, directed toward fostering Health Disparities Research Initiatives.
