PhD (Research-Based) Application Guide

Online Application

Online Application (Deadline for 2021 application cycle is March 1st.)

Application Fee

The $50 GSBS supplemental application fee will be paid directly to the centralized application service, BioMedCAS.

Official transcript(s) from every college/university attended

  • Please note, all transcripts are required. If you took one course at a community college or participated in a study abroad opportunity, we will need a transcript from the college where you completed the class.

  • If you are still enrolled in classes, please request a transcript from your current institution after grades for the fall semester post to your record. We will also need to see your Spring registration (if you are enrolled for Spring)

  • If you attended a college/university outside the U.S. you must submit an official WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation as well as the official transcript. WES has an option where they will send us your transcript along with their evaluation, in that case you don’t have to send us an additional transcript on your own.

  • 2 Letters of recommendation

    • The applicant must contact their recommenders to request the letters. We do not do this for the applicant. The letters of recommendation must be received from the recommender if emailed and not the applicant.
    • Letters must be on letterhead and signed.
      • Please ask your recommenders to scan and email their letters to if they choose not to upload their letter to the applicant's application. The email must come from your recommender’s university email address or their place of employment
    • Those that use Interfolio can have the letters emailed to from Interfolio.
    • A letter of recommendation from a Health Professions Advisory Committee will meet the requirement for two letters of recommendation.

    Test scores

    • An official GRE score is optional. Institution code: 6909
    • An official TOEFL or IELTS score is required for applicants who are not U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents, unless you’ve completed a degree program within the U.S. Institution code: 6909.

    Application Review:

We have a centralized admissions process meaning all applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of faculty representatives from each department.  Individual faculty do not make admissions decisions. All applications completed by the deadline are reviewed by the admissions committee.  The admissions committee meets to review applications completed by the deadline from late January through April.
