HSC Research Café
The HSC Research Café offers workshops, classes and seminars in subjects that are crucial to an academic research career, including Research Resources, Grant Writing, Publishing Your Research and Identifying Funding Sources for your research. We invite you to talk with us and participate in our Research Café Workshops.
Specific Aims Workshop
The Specific Aims workshop is offered to those who are actively developing grant applications. Applicants will be asked to submit an NIH-formatted Biosketch and a draft version of their Specific Aims page. These drafts will be distributed for review and critique. Workshop participants will present their Aims (3 slides) and then discuss with the review panel changes to wording and experimental design. This workshop provides attendees with valuable feedback prior to submission to the NIH.
Resubmitting for Success
The Resubmitting for Success Workshop will provide an opportunity to: 1) read your summary statement; 2) talk to your program officer or SRO; 3) write an introduction; 4) join the panel discussion. Mock Study Section
This Mock Study Section will simulate an NIH Review Panel in every detail possible. Participants will review NIH applications and participate in formal discussion and review of the grants. Panelists are not expected to critically judge the scientific merit of their assigned grants but whether the science described is logical, clearly described and meets the review criteria. At the end of the session, participants will have an opportunity to compare their critiques with the NIH reviews.
Faculty Mentoring Program
The University of North Texas has developed a Mentoring Guidebook that outlines the overarching goals and qualities of faculty mentoring. We have developed guidelines specific to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) Departmental Mentoring Program that further clarify the roles and responsibilities for Mentees and theirs Mentoring Committees.
A new junior faculty’s Mentoring Committee is intended to provide support, guidance, evaluation of grants and manuscripts, advice on teaching, and any other guidance needed, with the intention of successfully moving toward promotion. Associate and Full Professors are also encouraged to have mentors.
Junior faculty benefit from the input of diverse mentoring team, because the different mentors can provide valuable professional and personal guidance on a range of topics. The Mentoring Committee should include at least one senior faculty from within the institution and one mentor from outside the institution. The department chair will work with the junior faculty to help identify their mentors. Service as a faculty mentor should be acknowledged and rewarded because it plays a significant role in the life of the department.
SBS PreTenure Review Process
The purpose of the pre-tenure review is to (i) provide tenure-track faculty with feedback on progress toward tenure, (ii) identify areas needing improvement, and (iii) provide guidance in preparing the professional portfolio to support the review for tenure.
Intramural Funding Opportunities
HSC – via the Division of Research and Innovation – is rolling out the Research Enhancement Assistance Program (REAP) that offers funding for new, established and teams of faculty. These programs involve visionary partnerships across the board: department Chair, college Deans, and funding from the Division of Research and Innovation. Further, the review of these programs will involve the Research Advisory Committee, President’s Research Council and ad hoc faculty as needed – truly a collaborative program. Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs supports research fellows in all aspects of their training and development toward independent careers. We collaborate with University-wide organizations, departments, faculty, and staff to enhance the research, training, wellness, and professional development of postdoctoral scholars and to support their transition to successful careers in academia, industry, government, and other employment sectors.
