SUPPORT ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH AT HSC

Every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. More than 5.5 million Americans are living with dementia caused by the disease. It destroys memories, robbing people of their ability to perform simple, everyday tasks and destroying their quality of life.

CREATING INNOVATIVE WAYS TO TEST AND TREAT ALZHEIMER’S

Dr. Sid O'Bryant research

Led by Dr. Sid O’Bryant, one of the world’s leading experts in blood-based biomarkers of Alzheimer’s, the Institute for Translational Research (ITR) focuses on precision medicine approaches to brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, Down syndrome, Dementia with Lewy Bodies and others.

A major goal of our team is the identification and elimination of health disparities in Alzheimer’s disease faced by underserved communities.

Our team is enrolling 1,000 Mexican Americans, 1,000 non-Hispanic whites and 1,000 African Americans from the community to conduct the first-ever large-scale comprehensive examination of the biological underlying causes of Alzheimer’s among the three largest ethnic/racial groups in the U.S. Over the coming years, we will look at the biological, social, and environmental factors of thousands of study participants to determine which of those factors can lead to Alzheimer’s.

If we are successful, our work will create new ways to diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s disease for all populations.
