RADM (Ret) Sylvia Trent-Adams, PhD, RN, HSC President
A lifetime public servant, Dr. Trent-Adams began her extensive public health career in 1992 by joining the Commissioned Corps before ultimately retiring in 2020 from the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps with the rank of Rear Admiral Upper Half. Prior to joining the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Trent-Adams was a nurse officer in the U.S. Army and a research nurse at the University of Maryland.
Before coming to HSC as senior vice president and chief strategy officer, Dr. Trent-Adams served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health from January 2019 through August 2020. She shared responsibility with the Assistant Secretary for Health planning, coordinating and directing substantive program matters; policy and program development; and determining and setting legislative and program priorities.
Dr. Trent-Adams served from 2015 to 2018 as the Deputy Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. She was a trusted advisor to the Surgeon General, providing support on a variety of critical issues, including efforts to combat the opioid crisis.
Wendell Jones, MD, MBA
Dr. Wendell Jones is the Network Director for the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) No. 17 in Arlington. He is responsible for care and operations at seven VA healthcare facilities in Texas.
Dr. Jones completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. He initially worked as an Emergency Department physician at two hospitals in Miami. Later, he joined the Miami VA Medical Center as a staff physician in inpatient and outpatient units, where he was very involved in teaching and patient care. During this time, Dr Jones was awarded an Executive Master’s in Business Administration by the University of Miami.
Subsequently, Dr Jones served as the Associate Chief of Staff for Ambulatory Care at the Amarillo VA Medical Center in Amarillo, while holding a staff position at Texas Tech School of Medicine. Dr Jones was also Associate Chief of Staff for Ambulatory Care at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and was on staff at UT Health Science Center San Antonio. He also served as the Acting Chief of Staff in San Antonio. In addition, he served for over twenty years as the Chief Medical Officer in VISN 17. Presently, Dr Jones holds the position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and is a Certified Physician Executive with the American Association of Physician Leadership. He served as the Internal Medicine section Chair with the National Medical Association and remains on the executive board. He also held the position of the Secretary/Treasurer for the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine Services. In addition, Dr Jones is on the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council, where top health leaders explore current and new ways of saving lives in emergent and dire situations.
