Speaker: Haylie L. Miller, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, UNT Health Science Center
Objectives:
•Healthcare professionals will be able to list conditions that commonly co-occur with autism and discuss their impact on functional outcomes.
•Healthcare professionals will be able to identify targeted, interdisciplinary points of care outside of their specialty/area of focus to support necessary follow-up assessments for non-core symptoms of autism, and will be able to describe the roles/responsibilities of different disciplines as related to these symptoms.
•Healthcare professionals will be able to discuss the concept of intersectionality and how it applies to patients in their specific care setting, critically evaluate the clinical impact of potential biases and barriers to care on patients from underrepresented groups who are at risk for autism, and.
•Healthcare professionals will be able to discuss ethical and policy issues related to health disparities in care of the patient with autism and co-occurring conditions, and will be able to dispel harmful stereotypes about autism that lead to health disparities.
