Pediatric PANDAS Solutions

Session Overview:
Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, or PANS, is a relatively newly understood, under-identified, and therefore under-treated in clinical practice. In more than 80% of cases, there is evidence of an abnormal autoimmune or inflammatory response in the brain following any of various infections in the body. Treatment depends on the symptoms and severity in each case and may involve improving symptoms with psychiatric medicines and behavioral interventions, treating underlying infections or sources of inflammation with antibiotics, and/or stabilizing the immune system with immunotherapy and/or anti-inflammatory therapies. This session provides a practical approach to the recognition and management of PANS and PANDAS.

Session Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to…
-Define the 3 diagnostic criteria for PANS and the 5 diagnostic criteria for PANDAS
-Compare and contrast the presentation of PANS/PANDAS driven obsessive-compulsive behavior with childhood-onset Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
-Review the 3-pronged approach for treatment of PANS/PANDAS, and how to applit it based on severity of symptoms
-Educate patients/caregivers/teachers on management and expectations at home and at school, including the importance of providing accommodations through a 504 plan or IEP
