The Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine utilizes a multi-modal approach for instruction and assessment of the anatomical sciences (which include, in addition to gross anatomy, microscopic anatomy or histology, embryology, and clinical anatomy). Our School does not have a stand-alone anatomy course; rather, we have built anatomy as a longitudinal discipline throughout the curriculum, integrating it into the various systems-based courses. We have built a state-of-the-art facility, the Anatomy Resource Center, that houses a combination of computer-assisted technologies, human cadavers preserved by a process known as plastination, and diagnostic imaging instrumentation, available 24/7 to medical students. Computer-assisted technologies include virtual human cadaveric dissection, augmented reality setups based on actual human cadavers, virtual microscopy interfaces, and portable ultrasound units and ultrasound simulators coupled with augmented reality visualizations.
