TCOM Grand Rounds- January 11th – Palliative Pain Management

In this session we will review approaches to addressing pain
in individuals with terminal illness, including using opioids and
adjuvant therapies for pain management. Session objectives
include:
• Discuss how to use the Age-Friendly Health
Systems 4M’s framework to align care with patient
values and priorities for pain management
• Review general principles of pain management
• Compare and contrast pain management
and palliative care
• List common opioids and their characteristics

Sarah E. Ross, DO
Associate Professor,
Internal Medicine & Geriatrics,
Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine
Dr. Sarah Ross is an Associate Professor
at the University of North Texas Health
Sciences Center in Fort Worth. She
completed medical school at UNTHSC and
residency and fellowship at John Peter
Smith Hospital. She is board certified in
Family Medicine with additional certification
in Geriatrics and Hospice & Palliative
Medicine. She cares for older adult patients
in the office, house calls, assisted living
facilities and skilled nursing facilities. She
serves as a medical director for the James
L. West Dementia Care Center. As course
director for the geriatrics rotation and an
online geriatrics elective, she is dedicated
to educating trainees in geriatrics. She
is a project lead for UNTHSC’s Geriatric
Workforce Enhancement Program
and the medical director of Project
ECHO programing, offering training in
geriatrics and long-term care topics.
