Surrogate decision-making communication in the intensive care unit.

The UNTHSC System College of Pharmacy is recruiting up to 50 people to participate in focus group sessions for a research study entitled, “Surrogate decision-making communication in the intensive care unit”. The goal of this research project is to determine communication barriers between patients’ family members/surrogate decision makers and healthcare providers within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting and to identify skills and tools to improve communication in the ICU. Participation in the study includes a phone screening process that takes approximately 5 minutes and a study visit that will last 1.5 hours. The study visit will include completing surveys and participating in a focus group session. The focus group discussion will be audio recorded and transcribed.
