Steven J. Fliesler Ph.D. to Present Seminar Entitled Cholesterol Pathway Defects: Impact on the Structure and Function of the Retina as a part of NTERI Interdisciplinary Seminar Series (ISS)

We are pleased to announce that Steven J. Fliesler, Ph.D., will be presenting a seminar as part of the North Texas Research Institute (NTERI) Interdisciplinary Seminar Series (ISS).

Date: Thursday, November 16, 2023
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Location: IREB 250

The seminar is entitled “Cholesterol Pathway Defects: Impact on the Structure and Function of the Retina“.

Steven J. Fliesler, Ph.D., FARVO is SUNY Distinguished Professor, the Meyer H. Riwchun Endowed Chair Professor of Ophthalmology, and Vice-Chair/Director of Research in the Department of Ophthalmology (Ross Eye Institute), Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, of the State University of New York (SUNY)- University at Buffalo (UB).

Dr. Fliesler’s research is dedicated to the investigation of retinal degeneration associated with metabolic irregularities in isoprenoid biosynthesis. A significant area of focus is on dyslipidemias related to defective cholesterol metabolism, such as those seen in Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, and abnormalities in dolichol synthesis, like RP59. His laboratory employs both pharmacological approaches and genetically modified animal models to simulate human hereditary diseases. His current research endeavors are centered on understanding the role of lipid and protein oxidation in the mechanisms that lead to photoreceptor cell death in these retinal degenerations, utilizing an integrative approach that combines genomic, proteomic, and lipidomic techniques. Furthermore, Dr. Fliesler’s team is investigating the effects of acoustic blast overpressure on retinal structure and function, with a keen interest in developing therapeutic interventions for blast-induced retinal injuries.
