Nearly one million people have died from a drug overdose in the past decade, with a sharp increase since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. A variety of evidence-based strategies exist to prevent overdoses, but they are often not well implemented into community settings.

The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) is a NIH/NIDA funded large cluster randomized trial of 67 communities to assist with adoption of evidence-based practices to prevent drug use and other risky behaviors.

As Chair of the National Steering Committee, Dr. Walters will share his observations conducting implementation science research as well as early insights from this ongoing study.

Scott Walters, PhD, is a Regents Professor in the School of Public Health. Dr. Walters serves as Steering Committee Chair for the NIH/NIDA funded HEALing Communities Study, which is developing a national model to address the opioid crisis. His publications include more than 120 articles and five books, including Treating Substance Abuse: Theory and Technique.
