The prevalence of adolescent and young alcohol use continues to be a public health concern. Excessive alcohol use was responsible for more than 140,000 deaths in the United States each year during 2015–2019, or more than 380 deaths per day. Additional consequences occur in academic, interpersonal, social and health domains. Many factors are associated with adolescent alcohol use, including social media use.

Project PRISM is focused on developing a novel parentbased intervention focused on social media and alcohol use and determining whether the newly developed program can potentially improve parent-adolescent communication and reduce alcohol use and risky cognitions related to alcohol displays on social media among adolescents.

Dr. Dana M. Litt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Behavior & Health Systems. Her expertise is in theory-driven research focused on the etiology and prevention of drinking and related risk behaviors, including social media use among adolescents and young adults. She has been the PI of four federally funded (NIAAA) research projects and coinvestigator on 10 other NIH research grants over the last decade.
