“Unique Roles of Vascular Mineralocorticoid Receptors in Vascular Injury”

Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) signaling has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many cardiovascular diseases. Beyond its established role in blood pressure regulation, MR is expressed in vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells where it contributes to vascular dysfunction and disease independent of blood pressure. Prior work from our group has explored the benefit of global MR blockade in preclinical models of obesity to interrogate MR-dependent mechanisms of vascular dysfunction, particularly in the coronary circulation. Current ongoing work utilizing vascular cell-specific MR knockout models expands on this prior work to explore endothelial and smooth muscle cell MR involvement in obesity-associated coronary dysfunction and vascular compensatory responses to ischemia. This work provides novel insight into MR-dependent mechanisms of vascular disease and rationale for expanded utilization of MR antagonists in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
