SEPTEMBER IS PAIN AWARENESS MONTH

Did you know that the PRECISION Pain Research Registry was established at UNTHSC in 2016?

The registry conducts research on “precision medicine,” focusing on the pharmacogenetic and biopsychosocial aspects of chronic pain, to meet its vision of “a future for all unbounded by pain.” Over 400 patients in North Texas have enrolled and provided biological specimens for the registry’s biobank. Plans are now underway to expand the registry to other major cities in Texas.

The registry also sponsors a paid Clinical Research Fellowship Program for students in the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. The application process for the next fellowship class will begin later this semester.

An overview of the PRECISION Pain Research Registry and its research to improve patient safety with pharmacogenetically-informed opioid prescribing can be found at: https://www.dovepress.com/articles.php?article_id=40366.

Current registry priorities include: community outreach and engagement, fundraising, establishing a robust Web and social media presence, enhancing patient screening and recruitment, and collaborating with both internal and external investigators to advance pain research.
