REQUESTING FACULTY RESEARCH MENTORS FOR TCOM HONORS STUDENTS

The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine offers a Research Honors Elective for its 2nd year students who rank in the top 10 percent of their class. A goal of the course is to offer these students a wide range of opportunities reflecting the ongoing research within all schools, departments, or institutes at UNTHSC. This includes basic, clinical, and community-oriented research.

We request that any interested faculty members at UNTHSC complete the RESEARCH MENTOR FORM by using the above link, and return it to the Course Director, Dr. John Licciardone, at MET-568, or by e-mail to john.licciardone@unthsc.edu.

Research mentor forms will be collated and presented to the honors students during their first class session in July 2018. Students may then arrange to meet with faculty who are conducting research of interest to them, in anticipation of establishing a formal agreement to enter into a student-mentor relationship to conduct research during the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters. Although not required, faculty may also provide a brief 5-10 minute overview of their research during a class session that is tentatively scheduled for Friday, August 3, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

If selected by an honors student, the faculty research mentor must oversee and support all aspects of the research project leading to the required presentation of a poster by the student at the annual Research Appreciation Day at UNTHSC in Spring 2019. The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine will provide $1,000 to each selected mentor to help offset the costs of student participation in the research project.
