Ramadan Summer Student Program

HSC Colleagues:

On behalf of the North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI) and the entire research enterprise at HSC, I am pleased to announce the 2021 Raniyah Ramadan Summer Research Scholarships.

NTERI and HSC are proud to partner with the Ramadan family in honor of their daughter Dr. Raniyah Ramadan, who sadly passed away at the age of 34. Raniyah was born on September 30, 1976, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Dr. Tawfik and Siham Ramadan. Upon graduation from Ada High School, Raniyah attended the University of Oklahoma, where she was awarded her Bachelor of Science degree in 1998. In 2000, she received her Master’s in Public Health, followed by a Doctorate in Neuroscience in 2007. Dr. Ramadan was then awarded a prestigious post-doctoral research fellowship in ophthalmology and visual sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She then pursued further research in Neuro-Ophthalmology with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in Manhattan, New York.

NTERI is now accepting research proposals for a summer 2021 research grant. This grant opportunity provides up to $5,000 per award; a grand total of $10,000 in funding is available to support two summer students. The successful candidates will be placed in vision/neuroscience laboratories at UNTHSC for 8-10 weeks from June to August 2021. The purpose of this funding opportunity aims to support students who would like to do vision/neuroscience research with the hope of developing future scientists.

All HSC students, at any level and in any college, qualify for this program. Candidates should submit their Curriculum Vitae together with a scientific statement describing their research goals and ambitions. The evaluation committee will select the two most worthy students and team them up with a vision/neuroscience laboratory.

The deadline for applications is May 3, 2021.
