President’s Councils are seeking new members

Dear HSC Team:

January 2017 marked the inaugural convening of the five President’s Councils. During that initial meeting, council leaders designated terms for the members. It is time to select new council members to replace those rotating off after three years.

We are seeking 11 team members who have a strong desire to demonstrate extraordinary teamwork and collaboration to help us achieve our One University vision and live our purpose of transforming lives to improve the lives of others. New members selected through this process will serve a term ending August 31, 2022. Re-applications by former council members or those who are rotating off this year, are acceptable.

We relay our gratitude to the following UNTHSC team members who have left or are leaving the Councils after completing three years of service:

President’s Councils – General Information

Purpose
To increase team input, transparency and communication of decisions made by the HSC Cabinet

The Councils with designated Council leaders:

Academic Council (Dr. Charles Taylor) – makes recommendations affecting academic programs, faculty and students.

Research Council (Dr. Brian Gladue) – makes recommendations affecting research programs, faculty and students.

Finance & Budget Council (Greg Anderson) – makes recommendations affecting budget and finance issues impacting the HSC.

Built Environment Council (Jason Hartley) – makes recommendations affecting buildings, space allocation & management, parking and other real property.

People & Culture Council (Dr. Dennis Thombs) – makes recommendations affecting the HSC team including Our Values journey, compensation, performance feedback, coaching and other issues affecting our team.

Council Composition
Cross functional team consisting of 8-10 team members who are faculty and staff leaders and front-line team members. Faculty Senator council members serve as liaisons to the Faculty Senate to keep them apprised of Council work.

Each council will consist of individuals from all schools/programs in the following groups:

· Cabinet
· Deans
· Faculty Senate
· Faculty
· Staff

Council Charter

Councils will meet at least monthly and more frequently as needed to address challenges and opportunities designated by the President and Cabinet that affect the HSC. Council will meet for a specific purpose and use a standardized decision-making process to develop top 2-3 recommendations to resolve the identified issues. The Council leader will forward the recommendations to the Cabinet for a reply or decision within two weeks of the date received.

Terms

Beginning January 1, 2020, each new council member will serve for a three year term ending on August 31, 2022. The Council leader will select replacements as needed until the next call for members is made.

Selection Process

Supervisor approval is required to apply for Council membership. Individuals interested in serving on a council should submit a brief paragraph (no more than 100 words) to their supervisor outlining what interests them about being a part of one of the President’s Councils. Applicants should rank order councils if interested in more than one. Supervisors are responsible to submit applications to their respective Cabinet member.

IMPORTANT DATES:

Wednesday, December 04, 2019 by 12 PM – Supervisors must forward their recommended/approved Council applications to their respective Cabinet member for submission.

Tuesday, December 10, 2019 – The HSC Cabinet and I will select council members during our scheduled meeting

Thursday, December 19, 2019 – Council members will be published in The Daily News.

Council charges, with expected due dates, will be issued to the Council leaders during January 2020.
