Pre-doctoral fellowships Supported by a T32 Training Grant (NIH/NIA) in the Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease
The Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Training Program, funded through the National Institute on Aging, and sponsored by the department of Pharmacology & Neuroscience, is pleased to announce the availability of pre-doctoral fellowships. Current PhD students, from any discipline, interested in applying for this fellowship should
combine the following documents into one pdf file named after yourself and submit to Dr.
Nathalie Sumien (Nathalie.sumen@unthsc.edu) and Ms. Cheryl Bryant (Cheryl.bryant@unthsc.edu) electronically:
1. A current unofficial transcript and an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV)
2. One-page statement of interest outlining how the applicant’s research direction and/or
interest relates to the neurobiology of aging and/or Alzheimer’s Disease.
3. A short email of support from the mentor (directly to Dr. Sumien).
* Only permanent residents of the United States or US citizens are eligible to apply (due to
federal rules and regulations)
* Only students who have completed they first year can apply
Appointed predoctoral fellows will receive a stipend for $27,144 (the rest of the stipend to reach
the CBTS $35,000 stipend will be provided by the student’s mentor/home department/Provost
office using non-federal funds). In addition, trainees will have $3,038 to apply towards tuition
and fees ($871/semester), $750 for travel expenses to a national scientific meeting, and up to
$4,550 toward research and/or training related expenses, including purchase of student health
insurance or relevant reagents and supplies (excluding purchase of animal and human subject
related items and controlled substances), and $2,500 in childcare.
As a stipulation of accepting this fellowship, trainees are expected to commit to this program
for 12 months, register for PHRM 5300: Neurobiology of Aging (offered Even Springs),
participate in Journal Club (held once a month in the Fall and Spring) and in experiential
learning activities, attend seminars relating to aging and/or Alzheimer’s disease and join in
regular meetings with the program directors. In addition, they are required to acknowledge the
training grant (T32 AG020494) in any published abstracts or manuscripts and present their
progress at the Annual Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Trainee symposium (at
UNTHSC in May).
