Pre-doctoral fellowships
Supported by a T32 Training Grant (NIH/NIA) in the
Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease
The Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Training Program, funded through the National Institute on Aging, and sponsored by the department of Pharmacology & Neuroscience and the Center for Healthy Aging, is pleased to announce the availability of pre-doctoral fellowships.
Current PhD students, from any discipline, interested in applying for this fellowship should submit the following to Dr. Nathalie Sumien electronically (Nathalie.sumien@unthsc.edu):
1. An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV)
2. One page statement of interest outlining how the applicant’s research direction and/or interest relates to the neurobiology of aging and/or Alzheimer’s Disease.
3. A letter of support from the mentor (e-mailed directly to Dr. Sumien).

Appointed predoctoral fellows will receive a stipend in the amount of $24,816 (the remainder of the stipend to reach the GSBS $26,184 stipend will be provided by the student’s mentor or “home” department). In addition, trainees will have $2,614 to apply towards tuition and fees, $750 for travel expenses to a national scientific meeting, and up to $3,940 toward research and/or training related expenses, including purchase of student health insurance or relevant reagents and supplies (excluding purchase of animal and human subject related items and controlled substances, including radioactive reagents)(numbers subject to change due to NIH budget).
As a stipulation of accepting this fellowship, trainees are expected to commit to 12 months, participate in the Neurobiology of Aging course (PHRM 5300), in the Center for Healthy Aging Journal Club (held once a month in the Fall and Spring), in experiential learning activities, to attend seminars relating to aging and/or Alzheimer’s disease, and join in quarterly meeting with the program directors. In addition, they are expected to acknowledge the training grant (T32 AG020494) in any published abstracts or manuscripts and present their progress at the Annual Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Trainee symposium (at UNTHSC usually in May).
