National Chemistry Week at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History
October 22, 2018

Have you ever wondered how outer space and chemistry are connected? Members of the UNT HSC Masters in Medical Science program are teaming up with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History to explore how Chemistry is Out of This World during Chemistry Connections: National Chemistry Week, October 23 – 27 and you’re invited!

Nearly 200 student chemist volunteers from schools across North Texas will be on hand for the event. Volunteers from University of North Texas, Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, Texas Woman’s University, Texas A & M-Commerce, University of Dallas, University of North Texas-Health Science Center, University of Texas at Arlington, Collin College, Tarrant County College-Northwest Campus, Birdville High School, Fort Worth Country Day, Hebron High School, Southwest Christian School and Trinity Valley School will lead activities with Museum guests.

“National Chemistry Week connects students with hundreds of chemists in our studios. Science becomes real and professions become tangible,” Museum President Van Romans said. “It’s an opportunity for students to work alongside some of the best minds in the industry. We appreciate all volunteers from higher education and industry and our partners such as The Alcon Foundation for their dedication to this endeavor.”

During this activity-packed festival, guests will investigate the interesting world of outer space with classic chemistry experiments that deepen their understanding of the intriguing field of astrochemisty.

Some of the experiences planned during Chemistry Connections include:
• Learn how scientists use the spectra of stars in space to identify elements in our universe (run by MedSci students)
• Make tools that use chemicals to detect ultraviolet light
• Find out what comets are made of and how they relate to chemical compounds on our planet (run by MedSci students)
• Discover the chemistry behind simple rockets
• Check out our Classic Chemistry Corner to try out tried and true experiments like making dye with cochineal bugs, floating bubbles on cushions of CO2 gas, and creating colorful reactions
• Don’t miss a special Homeschool Afternoon from 1:30-4:00 on Thursday, October 25th

MedSci students are scheduled to be at the Museum on Thursday, October 25th from 10-12pm and Saturday, October 27th from 12-4pm. All Chemistry Connection activities are included in Museum general admission. Chemistry Week at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is sponsored locally by the Alcon Foundation. Additional support provided by the American Chemical Society.
