Funding Opportunity Number: RFA-DA-24-005
Deadline: January 15, 2024
Research Objective
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) seeks to stimulate mechanistic research targeted at investigating the neurobiological processes that underlie the effects of one or more psychosocial stressors on the risk or impact of SUDs and co-occurring psychiatric disorders in PLWH.
Research areas and questions of programmatic interest include, but are not limited to:
- Studies identifying transcriptional responses to psychosocial stress in HIV-1 pathogenesis and progression within the context of SUD and psychiatric disease.
- Studies identifying cellular, molecular and/or neurocircuitry mechanisms by which psychosocial factors interact with substance use and psychiatric morbidity to influence the pathogenesis and progression of HIV-1 infection.
- Studies examining the effect of acute or chronic substance use on the effect of psychosocial stress on the immune system following HIV-1 infection.
- Brain imaging studies exploring the impact of psychosocial stressors on neurocognitive function across groups varying in HIV status, SUD history, and relevant domains of psychopathology.
- Studies identifying potential psychosocial factors that may impact ART or inform treatment strategies for SUD with comorbid psychiatric conditions in PLWH.
Priority will be given to applications that propose research with the following features:
- Transdisciplinary research teams to foster the sharing of conceptual and/or technical expertise.
- The proposed research includes methods that examine causality across the variables of interest.
