Leadership Change in the North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI)
Please welcome and congratulate Dr. Dimitrios Karamichos on assuming the role of Executive Director, North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI). The Founding Director of NTERI, Dr. Abe Clark, is stepping down after many years of distinguished service to the North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI), the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), and HSC. Under the leadership of Dr. Clark, NTERI has grown to international reputation for conducting translational research in eye diseases and providing community service to educate and fight the causes of visual impairment. Dr. Clark will continue as Regents Professor at HSC as well as an active member of NTERI and will assist Dr. Karamichos during this transition period.
Dr. Karamichos joined HSC in April 2020 as the NTERI Director of Research and as a Professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences and in Pharmacology and Neuroscience. He is an engineer by training, having obtained his BEng in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, UK. Dr. Karamichos completed his MSc at Imperial College, University of London, UK focusing on tissue engineering, imaging modalities, and radiology. In 2006, he obtained his PhD in Tissue Repair and Engineering from University College London, University of London, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX and Schepens Eye Research Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. From 2013 to 2020, Dr. Karamichos was with the Dean McGee Eye Institute where he served as the Director of Research for the Oklahoma Center for Neuroscience Sciences, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Program Development, Graduate College, and Endowed Professor W. Stanley Muenzler in Corneal Diseases. His research is currently funded by the National Eye Institute, with significant contributions in the corneal biology field.
Based on his outstanding track record of academic accomplishments and his leadership experience, we anticipate Dr. Karamichos will provide the faculty, staff, and students of NTERI with an effective and seamless transition, to enact his vision in taking NTERI to the next level of preeminence in research, clinical engagement and health disparities.
