“Sex Differences in Medium Spiny Neuron Function in the Nucleus Accumbens”
Limbic system function is critical for the control of emotion, motivation, and memory. Robust sex differences and hormone effects have been detected in limbic system function and disorders such as mental illness. This includes the striatal brain areas such as the nucleus accumbens and caudate-putamen. In this seminar I will highlight sex differences in the properties of the striatal output neurons, the medium spiny neurons, and how these properties are regulated by sex steroid hormones in juveniles and adults.
