HSC Web Content Editors: Complete web page audit by Sept. 6.

Hello Web Content Editors and Communicators,

The website currently has over 1,000 pages that have not been edited or updated in over a year. Since we are not the subject matter experts to determine whether or not a page is still necessary, we need your help to address this problem.

We are asking for the below steps to be taken by September 6. We believe this will significantly impact the search ranking of all pages on unthsc.edu, and therefore we would like to see that happen as soon as possible.

What you need to do by September 6:

  • Please log into WordPress at your earliest convenience (use the SAML login link above the username field);
  • Visit the Dashboard > Pages > Pages Report
  • This will show you the pages you have access to and when they were last edited.
  • Visit any other sites you have access to and view the Pages Report there also. Do this by using the “My Sites” pull down in the top-left corner of the WordPress dashboard. You will see a list of sites you have access to. You can disregard Daily News.);
  • Identify in the Pages Report those pages under your management and visit each page by clicking on its title;
    • Review the page’s content for accuracy;
    • Make sure all links still work and images are loading;
    • Use the “Edit Page” link in the admin bar at the top of the page;
    • Make sure all images have descriptive alt text. If there are stock images, make sure the usage rights are still in effect;
    • Scroll down to the panel titled “Yoast SEO Premium” below the content editor;
      • Set a “Focus keyphrase” for the general subject of the page;
      • Set a “SEO title”. Don’t use the default tags. Instead set an appropriate and descriptive title;
      • Set a “Meta description”. Provide a short sentence describing what the page’s purpose is;
  • Click “Update”, whether you had changes to apply or not. This will set a new date for the last date the page was edited and indicate it was reviewed.
  • If a page needs to be unpublished, you can change its status to “Draft”. You’ll need to consider whether or not there are other links on the site that need to be updated or removed because they will become “broken” when the page is unpublished. If you need assistance with this, please complete a request to the MarCom Project Request form before you unpublish the page(s) and include a link to the page(s) you are considering removing.
  • If there are pages that are not under your management in the Pages Report, please help us identify a manager for them by emailing webmaster@unthsc.edu or collaborating with the subject matter expert of those pages.

If you want to onboard another editor to assist with this project, please provide them with this link, where they can begin the process of becoming a web content editor.

Feel free to email with any questions.

Thank you,

The Web Team
