Healthy people between 60-75 years old needed for a research study.

The OMM Department is recruiting people between 60-75 years of age for a study entitled “Use of high-precision Phase Contrast MRI flow technique to assess changes in cerebral blood flow before and after OMM in mild cognitive impairment.”

The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment on changes in brain blood flow. OMT is a hands-on treatment where Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) use their hands to test motion in the body, and use gentle pressure or motion to treat areas where more motion is needed. In this study, we will evaluate the application of specific OMT lymphatic and cranial techniques on cerebral blood flow as measured by MRI technology. You are invited to participate as a control subject if you:

Are between 60-75 years of age

Have no diagnosis of cognitive impairment or dementia

Can lay flat for one hour

Body weight under 450 pounds

Do not have other neurological conditions or diseases like Huntington’s disease, normal pressure hydrocephalus, stroke/CVA, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease

Are able to have an MRI, meaning that you don’t have: implanted pacemakers, intracranial aneurysm clips, Cochlear implants, certain prosthetic devices, implanted drug infusion pumps, neurostimulators, bone-growth stimulators, certain intrauterine contraceptive devices; or any other type of iron-based metal implants.

Are not pregnant

Do not have claustrophobia

Are able to understand and sign the informed consent forms.

This study only requires 1 visit that may take up to 2 hours. Compensation will be provided. Participation in this research study is voluntary, and if you are a student or employee of UNTHSC your participation (or non-participation) in this study will in no way affect your academic standing or employment.
