Jennifer Hughes, PhD, MPH
Assistant Professor, UT Southwestern Medical Center

Session Overview:
Youth depression is a vast problem that remains difficult to address despite ongoing treatment advances, and suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year-olds in the United States. Adolescence as a period of emerging and increasing risk and resilience may offer a developmental window for opportunities for early intervention. The problem is not that depression cannot be sufficiently prevented or alleviated. Rather, it is too-seldom detected early or treated with evidence-based medicine and psychosocial interventions. Whether in children or adults, the vast majority of people with depression and other mental illnesses do not receive appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Because youth are engaged with schools, primary care, and pediatric clinics, encounters in these settings provide numerous opportunities to address depression and suicide. This presentation will review the recent developments in screening, intervention, and prevention efforts to address youth depression.

Session Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to…
-Review prevalence rates and relevant risk, protective, and resilience factors related to youth depression
-Describe need to address depression across multiple settings, including in primary care, pediatric clinics, and schools
-Discuss universal prevention strategies and technology-based approaches to improve screening, treatment, and prevention of depression
