From the HSC Office of the President: ‘My Thoughts on the Attack on Our Nation’s Capitol’

Dear HSC Employees & Students,

First, I want to express my condemnation of the violence that occurred in our nation’s Capitol yesterday. The insurrection that followed the President’s remarks was appalling and an affront to the democratic values we hold dear as Americans. It was a clear attempt to undermine our U.S. Constitution. The peaceful transfer of power is a foundational element of our democracy and despite all this, I know our country to be a resilient beacon of freedom. As an example of resiliency, I was proud to see the U.S. Congress reconvene last night to complete their constitutional responsibility.

Secondly, I want you to know that you are not alone. Whether you feel scared, angry, hopeless or confused, the HSC community is here to support you. We are One University, and I encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for assistance.

If you are a student, please take advantage of our Student Support Program available through the HSC Office of Care and Civility. The program offers 24/7 counseling services by phone, chat via an app and video calls. Students can call 1-866-743-7732 or visit the website to find a counselor on demand or by scheduled appointment. The HSC Care team also is available at x2740.

If you are an employee, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can be accessed 24-hours-a day, seven-days-a week by calling 1.800.343.3822. To access benefits online, please visit https://www.awpnow.com and enter AWP-UNT-384 when prompted for a code. You can learn more about our EAP at: https://hr.untsystem.edu/employee-assistance-program.

Lastly, I hope you’ve all had a chance to read the message from myself and fellow UNT World leaders today regarding the upsetting events at the nation’s Capitol. I wanted to follow up directly with the HSC team as we struggle to comprehend the divisiveness around us and care for each other.

There is much work to be done to heal our fractured country. We can do our part at HSC by listening, treating each other with respect, and continuing to live our core values every day.

Together, we will work for a better tomorrow.
