Email tagging to prevent phishing

Starting on Friday, August 16, all email sent to UNTHSC email addresses from senders outside the organization had the subject line prepended with the tag [EXT] to denote that the message originated externally.

This tagging will give our customers another layer of information to determine the veracity or legitimacy of requests sent through email. For instance, users can more easily identify a problem and increase their skepticism when a message purports to be from a Dean or executive, but has the [EXT] tag at the front of the subject line. Users should also be more vigilant with attachments or links from external senders, as well as for senders asking for financial or username/credential information.

Please send any questions about this tagging system to the Information Security Office at informationsecurity@unthsc.edu
