Program Description

Osteopathic Scholars in Cancer Research (OSCR) is one of the program components of the HSC Scholars in Cancer Research Program offered to DO/PhD students. OSCR supports the students of Osteopathic Medicine conducting research during their PhD in the areas related to cancer and/or relevant fields of investigation for obtaining their DO/PhD. This training program promotes a team-based approach for solving complex problems that are essential to better understand the biological principles associated with health and disease. It also affords students a set of transferable and marketable skills that allow them to embark on various clinical/translational/biomedical science-related career paths.

OSCR program is designed exclusively to support the DO/PhD dual degree students. OSCR scholars will be provided with a broad foundation of knowledge in basic/translational/ biomedical sciences and will be trained with advanced technology in the state-of-the-art facilities under the supervision of enthusiastic mentors in the areas of cancer and health disparities.

Selection Criteria

  • Enrolled in DO/PhD program.
  • Academic merit.
  • Underrepresented groups in health professional programs (racial/ethnic groups, disabilities, disadvantaged backgrounds) are encouraged to apply.
  • Interest in diversity and cancer health disparity research.
  • Commitment to careers in basic, translational, clinical and community-based approaches to solving cancer and cancer disparities.

Benefits

  • Stipend up to $30,000 annually
  • Up to $6,000/year tuition fee coverage
  • Up to $2,000/year for research supplies
  • Travel allowance to participate in local/regional/national conference
  • Length of Support up to 2 years

Pre-Scholars:

OSCR scholars are eligible for full benefits (given above) when they accepted into the program after completing the first two years in TCOM and for their time conducting PhD research project. We may accept up to two students as Pre-Scholars after they complete first year in TCOM and participating in mentored research. Pre-scholars are not eligible for full benefits. They are eligible to receive total stipend $3,500 if they spend maximum expected time, 6 weeks in research. If they are unable to spend 6 weeks, their stipend will be pro-rated for the time spent in research. Pre-scholars’ mentors will receive $500 to purchase research supplies.
