Medicine is a life-long learning and thinking profession. To develop future physicians into autonomous learners and critical thinkers, curricula must apply interactive and thought-provoking pedagogies to medical training. There has been a recent emphasis on the shift to student-centered, active-learning pedagogies in undergraduate medical education that promote critical thinking and problem solving. Some of these pedagogies include: Case-based learning (CBL), Problem-based learning (PBL), Team-based learning (TBL), and Socratic questioning. To successfully implement these pedagogies, schools need to reconsider the nature of the faculty members and the learner’s role in delivering such a curriculum. Moreover, schools must provide appropriate faculty and student development to support success. At the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, faculty as well as students are facilitators of knowledge application, rather than traditional dispensers of first-order material.
