Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde, Ph.D., Research Physiologist, DB-III, Deputy Task Area Manager, Tactical Combat Casualty Care Research, U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Seminar entitled “Challenges of Pre-Hospital Trauma Care”, LIB110, 11-12. Synopsis: During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, over 87% of all injury mortality occurred in the pre-hospital environment. Of these deaths, 24% were deemed potentially survivable had combat medics had access to improved technology for hemorrhage diagnosis and control, and airway management. Dr. Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde is a member of the US Army research group whose focus is to increase survival of combat casualties in the pre-hospital setting by augmenting combat medic capabilities. She will be addressing the challenges associated the pre-hospital care the wounded soldier. She will present a summary of past, current, and future projects which focus on predicting shock during hemorrhage, improving intubation procedures, and controlling pain on the battlefield.
