Bilingual Students needed to help teach first year TCOM medical students

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) is looking for 12 PAIRS of bilingual individuals to help train first year medical students on how to communicate effectively with non-English speaking patients through the use of an interpreter. The medical students will be learning how to take a brief medical history through an interpreter. No physical exam is involved.

If you choose to participate, you will be interviewed by a student in a small classroom as several other students and one faculty facilitator observe. You will rotate in pairs, with one of you acting as the “patient” and the other acting as the “interpreter.” When your interview is finished, you will rotate to another room, and will be interviewed by another student. There are several rooms, so you will be interviewed several times. They will NOT be conducting a physical exam. Preparation materials will be sent to you in advance.

The dates of this exercise are Tuesday, 9/22 from 1:00 – 5:00 and Tuesday, 9/29 from 1:00 – 5:00. It pays $50 for each student on each date.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Laura Hopkins at Laura.Hopkins@unthsc.edu. Please let me know which language(s) you speak, and who your partner will be. Also please let me know which dates you are available for. I also need e-mail addresses for both partners.

Thank you!
