April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month – Check out our schedule of events

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is observed in April and focuses on both awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. During the late 1980s, the National Coalitions Against Sexual Assault (NCASA) polled other state coalitions and it was determined that a week in April would be the time to raise awareness about sexual violence. The non-profit National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) was established in 2000 to lead the SAAM campaign. In April 2001, NSVRC coordinated the first formally recognized national SAAM campaign. In 2009, former president Barack Obama was the first president who officially proclaimed the month of April as SAAM. The color teal and the teal ribbon was adopted as the
symbol of sexual assault awareness and prevention. Please join the Office of Care & Civility in observing SAAM during the month of April on the HSC campus. Listed below are the events planned to bring awareness about sexual violence to the HSC community. We look forward to seeing you at the events!

1. Sexual Assault Awareness Month Kick-Off: Monday, April 3rd from 9-11 AM in the MET Lobby. Grab a cup of coffee and treats with OCC to kick-off Sexual Assault Awareness Month and learn how you can raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent sexual violence.

2. SAAM Day of Action: Tuesday, April 4th from 12-1 PM in the MET Lobby. The first Tuesday of every April is SAAM Day of Action. The Day of Action is an opportunity to start off the month with highly visible and coordinated actions. Please join us on observing the Day of Action by wearing teal today. We will be passing out teal ribbons and pins along with snacks!

3. Denim Day: Wednesday, April 26 – The Office of Care and Civility asks the HSC community to wear denim to bring awareness to sexual assault and sexual violence. Stand in solidarity with the HSC campus by saying no to prohibited conduct such as sexual assault. For more information about the history of Denim Day, please visit: https://denimday.org/

4. Teal on Tuesdays: Every Tuesday in the month of April! Teal is the adopted color for sexual assault awareness and prevention. Join us by wearing teal every Tuesday in April to show your support in making the HSC community free from sexual assault, harassment, and abuse.
