The Innovation Award is for $75,000 per year, for up to two years. The award is intended to support highly promising investigators with stellar track records of accomplishment, who have the potential to advance the field of lung disease science. Successful applicants are investigators with evidence of prior excellence and productivity in the early stages of their careers; applicants must have held a K or R type award within three years prior to applying for this Lung Association award. Grants are subject to annual review and may be granted for up to two years. The second year of support is contingent on demonstration of satisfactory progress, as well as, the availability of funding from the Lung Association.

It is recommended that applicants submit projects to the appropriate Institutional Animal Care and Use of Committee (IACUC) and human subjects Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the time of application or before. Copies of the approvals must be provided to the American Lung Association prior to the start of an award.
