The 2023 Women’s Cardiovascular and Brain Health (WCBH) Symposium will be held on Feb. 9, 2023 starting at 8:00AM in the MET (room 109-111) building.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend this event, in which there will be a free lunch, scientific talks from distinguished guest speakers, student poster and oral presentations/competitions, a panel discussion, prizes, and networking opportunities.

The purpose of the conference is to 1) promote research addressing women’s cardiovascular and brain health, 2) provide the opportunity for students and postdoctoral fellows to present their work, 3) foster regional and local research collaborations, and 4) raise awareness about the importance of women’s health research.

We encourage all students to submit an abstract by Jan. 13, 2023 for the opportunity to present an oral presentation and to win a prize. The speakers and the panelist for the symposium are dynamic experts in field that will facilitate a lively, engaging, and informative session.

Limited submission opportunities are those for which the agencies restrict the number of proposals or nominations a university may submit for consideration for an award. Extra submissions can result in rejection of all submitted by the institution. Therefore, all eligible and interested nominees must be internally screened to determine which will represent the university in the agency’s competition. This application is for the nomination from our institution.

Alcon Research Institute Young Investigator Grants Eligibility and Guidelines: Intended to encourage and promote the early independent career development of clinicians and scientists in vision research and ophthalmology.

    • Along with the application, applicants should submit an up-to-date NIH-style bio-sketch or detailed CV, an up-to-date photo, and a letter of reference, preferably from the department head.
    • Only two applications are permitted from a given institution. If more than two applications are submitted, a note will be sent to the head of the department asking him/her to decide on the top two applicants.
    • The maximum grant amount is $75,000. The grant will be applied to support the research program of the grant recipient at their institution
    • A maximum of no more than 10% can be taken from the grant by the institution for Indirect Costs.
    • Applicants must be devoting at least 50% of their time toward research.
    • Grant date can be no more than eight years post training
    • No requirements based on Rank/Level/Title but Applicants must not yet have attained R-level grant status or equivalent. Candidate must be appointed or nominated to the assistant professor level (either research or tenure track). Associate professors are allowed, provided they are 8 years or less.

For each competition, principal investigators are required to submit a limited submission pre-proposal by the internal deadline specified in the announcement. The pre-proposal should address the sponsoring agency’s priorities as outlined in the announcement.

The pre-proposal should be no more than 3 pages in length in 11-point font with 0.5” margins and must contain the following information:

    • Proposal title
    • Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator(s), Department and College
    • Proposed start date and duration of the project
    • Estimated (total) budget for the entire performance period
    • Summary of the project (main body of the document)

The limited submission committee will convene to review the pre-proposals following review guidelines. The committee will provide a recommendation to the Vice President of Research who makes the final decision regarding the internal competition.

Healthy volunteers (ages 55-80) needed for heat and blood flow study

 

The University of North Texas Health Science Center and the Human Vascular Physiology Laboratory are recruiting up to 72 subjects (male and female) to take part in a study that will determine whether home-based leg heat therapy will improve functional capacity, blood vessel function, and muscle blood flow in older adults.

You must be:
• 55-80 years old
• Generally healthy
• Have not used tobacco/nicotine in the last 6 months (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, nicotine patch/gum)

Study Requirements:
• Visit Human Vascular Physiology Laboratory at UNTHSC on 9 separate days; the first will be 1-2 hours, six of the visits will be approximately 6 hours, the remaining two visits will be less than 30 minutes.
• Participation in this study also involves 8 weeks of home-based leg heating using a pants heating system that will be provided to you. Each session will be 1 hour long, and 4 sessions per week are required.
• Participation in this study is voluntary, and if you are a student or employee of UNTHSC your participation (or non-participation) in this study will in no way affect your academic standing or employment.

Subjects will be compensated for their time and effort.

Orientation Leaders have the opportunity to impact the incoming class by guiding them through a week of learning about HSC and helping them engage in team building activities to become more connected to one another and the campus.

This is a compensated position that allows you to work up to 40 total hours during your time as an Orientation Leader.
