Veterinarians Without Borders
Dr. Katherine Fogelberg, along with several students and other CPH faculty, has contributed to research with Veterinarians Without Borders (VWB) examining the prevalence and transmissibility of three different neglected zoonotic diseases (diseases transmissible from animals to humans), including African sleeping sickness, also known as trypanosomiasis. The results from VWB’s work have indicated a much higher prevalence of this severe disease in northern rural Uganda than was previously reported. VWB’s program helps ensure the people of Northern Uganda receive education and information about zoonotic disease, of which vector borne diseases are a large subset. The overall intent of VWB’s efforts is to increase capacity within Northern Ugandans to better recognize, treat, and control neglected zoonotic diseases to help increase access to animal source foods, which will increase their nutrition status and help increase the overall quality of life for this rural pastoralist population.
