CPH instructor named co-investigator on new YMCA project, funded by Sam’s Club
College of Public Health instructor Marcy Paul has been named as co-investigator on a $64,000 Healthier Community Initiative grant funded by the Sam’s Club Giving Program and awarded to YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth, to focus on healthier opportunities for southeast Fort Worth residents. The grant is specifically focused toward African American and Hispanic/Latino individuals and families in zip codes 76105 and 76104. The Sam’s Club Grant includes four other sites around the country – Dallas; New Haven, Connecticut; Washington, D. C.; and Albany, NY.
Serving as co-investigator with Paul is Reeshemah Davis, vice president of operations and community development for McDonald & Southeast YMCAs. The two will work with a team of local community stakeholders on the project, including Tony Shuman, YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth president/CEO; Jennifer Murphy, YMCA; Pastor Robert McGinty, Community Missionary Baptist Church; Tamequa Muhammad, Fort Worth Independent School District; Dr. Barbara Estment, JPS Health Clinic, Stop Six/Walter B. Barbour; Ginny Hickman, Cook Children’s Health Care System; Jerome Johnson, City of Fort Worth Community Development Council; and Veronica Tolley, Cook Children’s Neighborhood Clinics.
Goals of the initiative are to coordinate and link systems between health care providers, clinical settings and community-based organizations in predominantly African American and Hispanic/Latino communities to help guide individuals toward prevention efforts and programs that are proven to increase health outcomes; and to enhance local efforts and opportunities for healthier eating and physical activity in the target neighborhoods.
Outcomes from the initiative will be shared with the community and other YMCAs across the country in the development of national leading practices.
